Without a doubt, the northern pike is a voracious predator -- consuming three to four times its weight during the course of a year. Besides smaller fish, its diet includes frogs, crayfish, small mammals, and birds -- almost anything within range. Because of this voracious appetite the Alligator of the North is a relatively easy game fish to catch. The best lures are big spoons, spinners and jerkbaitss, but pike will attack any artificial that looks big enough for a meal. One of the most effective baits is a big minnow fished beneath a float. Once hooked, northerns typically leap or thrash the water surface, then make a series of powerful runs.
Northern pike inhabit protected, weedy bays. After the spring ice melts, they move further into the shallows and marshes to spawn. They retreat to deep, cool waters in summer.
Eva Lake Resort & Outposts offers the best northern pike fishing, with 30- pounders (13.6 kg) prowling here. Check us out.
